Upon choosing the final design for the mural, I was able to create a grid-like system to help mimic my collage style of work though painting, as I am actually not a painter. Painting started in mid-October I think, and although the mural was going to be large, I knew I could tackle it as I have created other works larger than this project. In staying true to myself, I wanted to use a wide range of colors that at first glance wouldn't necessarily be associated with what you would see for a veterans memorial. Now that the mural is complete, the next step in the process of finishing the entire memorial will start; the adding of signed ceramic tiles by veterans who are students, alumni, staff members, or faculty associated with GVSU. All of these tiles will be below the mural and will surround a poem written by former GV faculty member and Vietnam Vet, Don Drooger. All in all, this was an AMAZING experience for me. Not only was I honored to take this task, but I was also able to learn so much more into the mindset of a veteran. If you have any questions are want something further explained let me know and I'll be happy to assist!" ~ Joey Salamon |
